Telematics in recoveries: geofence to repossession
Using fleet visibility and geofence breaches as workflow inputs — carefully, with human gates.

Telematics turns the vehicle from an abstract balance-sheet asset into a live operational object. Used well, it improves recoveries and customer conversations. Used poorly, it creates alert fatigue or ungoverned automation. Vehicle finance platforms should treat telematics as a control loop with human gates — not a spy gadget bolted onto a CRM.
Fleet visibility as a KPI
Funders increasingly ask what share of the live rental fleet was seen recently. “We have trackers” is weaker than “98% of on-rental vehicles pinged in 24 hours, and here are the offline units.” Visibility metrics belong on ops boards next to arrears.
Geofences that mean something
Drawing polygons is useless unless breach events enter workflow. A high-severity breach on a performing account may warrant a customer contact; on a defaulting account it may justify opening or advancing a recovery case. Policy flags should default to cautious (for example auto-recovery off until the tenant enables it).
From signal to repossession
Repossession is a legal and operational process, not a GPS ping. Platforms can arm geofences, package handoff information for agencies, score agencies on recovery performance, and keep cost lines — while humans authorise the step. See also the arrears ladder so telematics does not skip cure economics.
Privacy and proportionality
Tracking personal information engages POPIA. Be clear with customers in agreements and notices; limit access to roles that need it; audit sensitive views. Security isolation still applies: one tenant’s fleet map is not another’s.
Rent 2 posture
CarTrack integration supplies positions and breaches; a recovery cockpit surfaces visibility and at-risk context; optional automation can open recovery cases under tenant flags. Live telematics is config-dependent. Learn more under integrations and tracking features, or walk a recovery scenario in a demo.
